Vein Ablation Procedure
What is Vein Ablation?
Vein ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency by closing off diseased veins so blood can reroute through healthier veins. The body naturally absorbs the treated vein over time, leading to improved circulation and symptom relief.
At Midwest Vein & Laser, we offer two advanced forms of vein ablation:
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA/EVLT): Uses laser energy to seal faulty veins.
Both methods are FDA-approved, highly effective, and require little to no downtime, making them a preferred alternative to vein stripping surgery.
What Does Vein Ablation Treat?
Varicose veins occur when vein valves weaken, allowing blood to pool in the veins, causing bulging, twisted veins and uncomfortable symptoms. If left untreated, varicose veins can lead to chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), increasing the risk of skin ulcers and blood clots.
Vein ablation is highly effective in treating:
- Bulging, twisted varicose veins on the legs
- Aching, heaviness, and throbbing pain
- Swelling, cramping, and leg fatigue
Itching, burning, and skin irritation near veins - Discoloration and skin changes caused by poor circulation
Most patients experience immediate relief from symptoms, along with significant cosmetic improvements.
Who is a Good Candidate for Vein Ablation?
Vein ablation is an excellent choice for men and women suffering from symptomatic varicose veins who want an alternative to surgery. If you have leg pain, swelling, or discomfort due to varicose veins, this treatment may be right for you.
Ideal candidates include those who:
- Experience leg heaviness, aching, or fatigue after prolonged standing.
- Have visible, bulging varicose veins that cause discomfort.
- Are looking for a minimally invasive treatment with quick recovery.
- Have been diagnosed with venous reflux disease during an ultrasound exam.
- However, individuals with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or certain vascular conditions may require alternative treatments. Our specialists will evaluate your condition and customize a treatment plan based on your needs.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Vein ablation is an outpatient procedure performed in about 30-60 minutes. The treatment is virtually painless, and local anesthesia is used to ensure comfort.
The procedure begins with ultrasound guidance to map the diseased vein. A small catheter is inserted through a tiny incision, and either laser or radiofrequency energy is applied inside the vein to seal it shut. Once the vein is closed, blood naturally reroutes to healthier veins, improving circulation.
Most patients are able to walk immediately after the procedure, and there is no need for stitches or downtime. Compression stockings are typically recommended to support healing and optimize results.
Recovery & Best Practices for Optimal Results
Most patients return to normal activities the same day, but proper aftercare is essential to ensure the best results.
To speed up recovery and maximize benefits:
- Wear Compression Stockings – Helps reduce swelling and improve circulation.
- Stay Active – Light walking is encouraged to promote healthy blood flow.
- Avoid Heavy Lifting & Prolonged Standing – Reduce strain on your legs for the first few days.
- Elevate Your Legs When Resting – Minimizes swelling and discomfort.
- Bruising and mild soreness are normal but resolve within a few weeks as the treated vein fades.
