All About Sclerotherapy

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, in-office procedure that treats spider veins and smaller varicose veins by injecting a specialized solution into the affected vein.

This causes the vein walls to collapse, safely redirecting blood flow to healthier veins. Over time, the treated vein is absorbed by the body and fades from view.

Sclerotherapy: What Does It Treat?

Sclerotherapy is most commonly used to treat:

  • Spider veins (tiny red, blue, or purple veins on the surface of the skin)
  • Small varicose veins
  • Reticular veins (bluish veins just below the surface)
  • Symptoms such as leg heaviness, aching, burning, and swelling associated with vein disease

How does Sclerotherapy Work?

During sclerotherapy, a very fine needle is used to inject a saline-based or foam solution directly into the affected vein. The solution irritates the vein wall, causing it to collapse and seal shut. The body then reroutes blood through healthier veins and gradually absorbs the treated vein. The procedure is quick, typically taking 30 minutes or less, with no anesthesia required.

Who Is a Candidate for Sclerotherapy?

Most adults with visible spider veins or smaller varicose veins are good candidates. Sclerotherapy is especially effective for people experiencing symptoms like aching or heaviness in the legs. It is not recommended for pregnant women or individuals with certain blood clotting disorders. A consultation will determine if this treatment is right for you.

What to Expect at the Consultation

At your initial visit to Midwest Vein & Laser, one of our experienced providers—Dr. Sukir Sinnathamby, MD, or Kandy Hammond, RN, BSN, MBA/HCM—will evaluate your vein health. We’ll review your medical history, discuss symptoms, and perform a vein screening or ultrasound if needed. We’ll then create a customized treatment plan, explaining the number of sessions you may need and what results to expect.

What to Expect During Treatment

The sclerotherapy procedure is performed in-office and typically takes less than 30 minutes. You’ll lie down comfortably as the provider uses a tiny needle to inject the solution into your veins. You may feel mild stinging or cramping for a few seconds. Most patients are up and walking immediately after the procedure and can resume normal activities the same day.

Tips for Recovery and Getting the Best Results

- Wear compression stockings as recommended by your provider to aid circulation and healing.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and hot baths for 48 hours.
- Stay active with gentle walking to encourage blood flow.
- Protect treated areas from sun exposure to avoid skin discoloration.
- Follow-up treatments may be recommended for optimal cosmetic results.

Type of Results to Expect

You may begin to see improvement within a few weeks, with full results typically visible after several months. Veins gradually fade and symptoms like leg aching and swelling improve. Some patients require multiple sessions depending on the severity of the veins being treated.
